New Philly area girls!

Blog 1 Jamie

Meet Jamie!  She is a current 5th grader who will be a new Upper Inter Girl at Canadensis this summer, but she’s already a total camper and has lots of overnight camp experiences!  Last month, Cara and I got to hang out with some of her family around the kitchen table, and we had a great time getting to know her!  Here’s what you should know about this fun new camper:
  • Jamie takes three dance classes each week – ballet, hip-hop and jazz.  She loves to dance!
  • Jazz is her favorite and she also really likes that teacher.
  • She has two dogs, named Cody and Dixie.  She also has a guinea pig in her room named Pebbles!
  • She’s lucky to have a pool in her backyard and learned to swim when she was two years old.
  • She’s the youngest of 4 siblings.  We got to meet her older brother Jackson, and she also has two older sisters.
  • Her favorite thing about camp is being with a lot of people her age.  She just loves to be in a group!
  • She likes to do a lot of stretching, and she’s flexible!  She showed us how easily she can do a heel extension.
  • She’s really into nature activities, and tried to encourage her family to build a fire pit in the backyard that they can use for s’mores.
  • Right now she’s even working on a ceramics project at school that has chocolate and graham crackers marshmallows on a plate, because she loves s’mores!
  • She has a beautiful voice, but she didn’t sing for us.
  • She likes to play tennis and is going to take tennis lessons this summer.
  • She has a huge family and lots of cousins who live in Israel. She’s been to visit Israel three times…but has only been to New York once, even though her dad works there every day!
  • She really enjoys sleeping late and will staying up with anyone else in the bunk is awake!  (I better warn her counselors…)
  • She loves Arts & Crafts, and will keep her clothing super neat…she has a folding board where she likes to practice folding T-shirts!
Blog 1 Sasha
And on a super rainy night, I also got to meet Sasha – she’s a current 4th grader and will be a Lower Inter Girl for her first summer at Camp Canadensis!  I first got to meet her at our New Camper Bouncing event, and it was great to see her get to know all the other new campers…it was easy to see how quickly she makes friends!  It was great to chat more with her about camp, and here’s what you should know about this awesome new camper:

  • She plays viola, and likes music!
  • She goes to Bala Elementary, and the day after my visit was a bake sale…she was bringing vegan brownies her mom made!
  • Sasha loves reading and has a lot of books in her room.  She really like the Nancy Drew books right now.
  • She’s gone to a bunch of day camps, and has already learned to swim.  She can do the backstroke all day and hold her breath under water for a while…which comes in handy for the Color War “underwater swim” competition!
  • She likes to wake up early…like 6AM early!  She’s already prepared with a lot of activities she can do at camp in case that happens.
  • She loves to talk, and is very easy to talk to!
  • When doing photo shoots with friends, her “signature look” is to pose with a feather boa!
  • She recently dressed up like Katy Perry, and had a blue wig from the costume in her closet still.
  • Sasha is excited about so many camp activities – soccer (she plays defense), glass fusion, woodworking, paddle boarding and more!
  • She doesn’t love wearing a life jacket…but in order to do the summit and play on the watermat in the lake, she knows it’s worth it!!
  • I was impressed by how many camp rules she knew (like the 5 stuffed animal/pillows maximum on beds) – she went through the whole handbook and remembered so much!

May Day Up at Camp!

This blog entry comes on Friday, May 2, a day after I was up at camp to see how everything is progressing for Summer 2014.  I must say that a visit up to camp this time of year got me really pumped up!  Even with harsh winter we experienced this year, camp looks absolutely terrific and many of our projects are either completed or in full swing.  Matt Unger and his initial team of pre-camp workers are busy setting up camp for the arrival of our first pre-camp group this weekend.  And, our kitchen is up and running as Chef David Stein and his team are serving three meals a day in the dining room.  Yesterday, it was grilled cheese and tomato soup (a Brian favorite)!

As for all of the projects this year, here are  just a few of the things that you will see for Summer 2014…

– Several of camp’s cabins will receive major renovations.

– Our Senior Basketball Courts will be repaved, resurfaced and repainted.  They will also have brand new hoops.

– We will be continuing with our multi-year plan to pave many of camp’s internal roads.

– There will be a new deck with additional entrances to our Rec Hall facility.

– New tetherball courts will be added to the campus.

– There will be a new garden at camp.

– Several of our tennis courts will be repainted in addition to receiving new fencing.

– There will be a multitude of new signage around camp.

– We will be upgrading the ventilation system in our Gymnastics Pavilion.

– We will have new decking for the outdoor seating area of our Dining Hall.

– We will have a new Summit (which is currently being custom built for us).

A brand new summit is being custom built for Camp Canadensis!

On the scheduling side of camp things, we are working really hard to bring in a number of different one day workshops and clinics in a variety of different activity areas to make the summer a bit more special and unique.  On top of that, we have added a number of new electives to the camp schedule.

Now that we are into May, we remind all of our camp families that CAMPER FORMS are due on May 9.  So, please do not forget to submit all of our campers forms by next Friday.  Very soon, we will be sending out Camper Elective choices.  And, as has always been the case, we will only input choices for campers with all of their forms submitted.

Camper Forms are Due on May 9.

Here were some great updates we received from campers over the past few weeks…

2014 Upper Inter Girl Brooke Bednoff celebrate her birthday, Color War style!  Brooke’s mom invited the bunk over (however, with Spring break, several of the bunkmates were away).  However, that didn’t stop the fun for attendees Avery Shaw, Paige Miller and Skye Kades as Brook’es mom broke Color War, complete with whistles and silly string. An afternoon and evening of competition ensued between Blue Winter and Gold Summer.  In the end, the blue team won, but both teams were definitely winners!  Here are some pictures…

2014 Lower Senior boy has teamed up with a very special partner, New York Giant David Diehl, as part of his bar mitzvah project.  Recently, they were at the Project Sunshine Annual Gala at the Waldorf Astoria in N.Y. and the two will be working together this spring spending time with sick children.  Here is a photo…

As always, some great home visits to report on over the past several weeks…

In Warren, NJ, I saw Danny and Sophia Brociner, who join us for their first and fourth summers at Canadensis, respectively.  Danny, who is currently in the 4th grade and will be a Lower Inter, enjoys fishing and can be found at a nearby Dealeman’s Pond when the weather is warm with rod and reel.  He also likes biking and gaga.  Year round, he is active in his Cub Scout den and recently competed in the annual Pinewood Derby competition.  In the Fall, Danny plays soccer.  At camp this year, he is looking forward to Woodworking and the Hondas.  As for Sophia, who currently in 7th grade and will be a Lower Senior this year, she is currently playing catcher on her Basking Ridge travel softball team.  She also told me that her basketball team won the Warren Rec League.  This has also been a big year for Sophia to see so many camp friends at a number of bat mitzvahs.  Sophia celebrated her own back in October with an “Under the Sea” theme.  Sophia wanted to give a shout out to the girls of Bunk 14 from Summer 2013 and is really looking forward to being a Senior this summer.  Here is a pic…

In Livingston, NJ, I got to hang out with Ben and Justin Nikpour.  Justin joins us for his second summer as a Lower Inter and welcomes Ben for his first summer as an Upper Junior.  Both boys have been very busy these days.  Currently in 3rd grade, Ben is taking guitar lessons and also takes art classes, where he is currently working on different sculptures.  Recently, he participated in his school’s law fair where students have to present a case and argument to a jury.  The winner will actually get to present their case in Trenton, NJ.  On top of that, Ben plays soccer and lacrosse in the Livingston Rec programs.  At camp in 2014, he is excited to try woodworking and the quads.  As for Justin, now in the 4th grade, he is playing attack on his Livingston Lancers travel lacrosse team.  In the Fall, he played tackle football as a defensive lineman on the Livingston team.  Recently, he had a sleepover with his camp friends from last summer and he wanted to give a shout out to the boys of Bunk 4 from Summer 2013.  These days, Justin is also watching a lot of the NBA playoffs.  At camp, Justin can’t wait for waterskiing and Color War.  Here is a photo…

Also in Livingston, NJ, I was with Ryan and Rachel Stern.  Rachel is back for Summer #3 as an Upper Senior and is happy that Ryan will be at camp for his first summer as an Upper Junior.  Ryan, who is in 3rd grade, is currently playing baseball on his team, the Brewers, where he plays pitcher, third base and shortstop.  In the Winter, he plays on a basketball team.  When at home, he can be found making videos.  Some of his work can be found at the Awesome Cheese Channel on You Tube by clicking here.  Ryan is also a fan of the New York Yankees, likes to write and and enjoys art.  When he comes to Canadensis, he is ready for all of the sports, water sports, swimming and art activities.  As for Rachel, who is in the 8th grade, it’s been a great year seeing many of her camp friends at a bunch of bat mitzvahs.  Rachel celebrated her own big day in November, which was attended by many of her camp sisters.  Rachel wanted to give a shout out to the Girls of Bunk 17 from Summer 2013 and she can’t wait to be with them in just a few months.  Here is a snapshot…

For a final stop in Livingston, NJ, I was with Mason Levitt, a 4th grader who will be in our Lower Inter division this summer.  Mason is currently playing third base and centerfield on his Cincinnati baseball team.  He is also a purple belt in Tae Kwon Do.  Also on his schedule of activities is his involvement with the Livingston Cub Scout pack.  Recently, they took a trip to Washington, DC.  Mason also let me know that his car won “Most Humorous” in this year’s Pinewood Derby competition.  On top of all that, Mason is a trivia maven when it comes to all things Star Wars and Superheroes.  In fact, Mason had me stumped on some Star Wars trivia (and I consider myself pretty knowledgeable on the subject).  When he comes to camp for his first summer, Mason is ready to try the hondas and quads and waterskiing as well as spending the summer with his cousins (Rebecca and David Altschul).  Here is a photo…

In Richboro, PA, I spent some time with Jack and Nicole Zibelman.  Nicole will be joining us at camp for her 6th summer as a Super Senior and she is beyond excited to welcome Jack to camp for his first summer as an Upper Junior.  Currently in 3rd grade, Jack plays drums and is recently practicing for an upcoming concert at Penguin’s where he will be playing Rolling Stones classic tunes “Satisfaction,” “Get Off My Cloud,” and “Honky Tonk Women.”  In addition to that, he plays hockey and tennis and is a talented hip hop dancer.  At home, he enjoys magic and card tricks.  This summer, he is excited for Color War, the banana boat, water trampoline and the trip to Dorney Park because he really likes roller coasters.  Now in the 9th grade, Nicole is playing tennis for her JV school team.  As always, she is keeping in touch with her camp friends and recently went to bunkmate Ali Beyda’s house.  Nicole wanted to give a shout out to the Girls of Bunk 18 from Summer 2013.  She is really looking forward to having her brother at camp as well as all of the privileges of being a Super Senior, including the College Tour trip.  Here is a picture…

In Armonk, NY, I met up with Abby and Alex Yallof, twins who are in the 4th grade and will be part of the Lower Inter division in their first summer at camp.  Abby is busy with gymnastics lessons as well as rehearsing her hip hop routine for an upcoming dance recital.  She is also involved in her community theater, where she recently played the lead role in Mary Poppins.  In another rendition of Mary Poppins, she played as Michael.  She has also performed in other shows such as Wizard of Oz, Aladdin and The Sound of Music.  At Canadensis in 2014, she is looking forward to having her birthday at camp, meeting tons of new people and making memories with her bunk.  As for Alex, he is currently playing pitcher on his baseball team, the Bulls, and midfield on his soccer team, the Castleford Hurricanes.  In the Winter, he plays indoor soccer and basketball.  Alex told me that when it comes to rooting for teams, he cheers for the Yankees, Nets, Rangers, Islanders, Giants and Jets.  At camp, he can’t wait to try the hondas and playing all of the sports.  Here is a photo…

In Millwood, NY, I saw the Forsters…Sammi, Ally and Erik.  Twins Sammi and Ally are back for a 4th summer at camp as part of the Freshman division and are happy to introduce Erik to camp as an Upper Junior.  Currently in 6th grade, Ally and Sammi have been busy since camp ended last year playing on the Northeast Regional Olympic Development Soccer team.  Sammi plays forward on that team while Ally is a midfielder.  Both also play on a local team, the Red Storm.  In the upcoming weeks, the twins will celebrate their bat mitzvah.  This summer at camp, the girls said they are basically looking forward to everything and wanted to give a shout out to Girls Bunk 10 from Summer 2013.  They are also excited that their brother Erik is coming for his first summer.  Erik, currently in 3rd grade, is playing right now on his baseball team, the Diamondbacks.  He also plays midfield on his soccer team, the Red Storm.  When at home, Erick enjoys playing video games like Madden 25 and Call of Duty and rooting for his favorite teams, the Heat, Nets, Mets and Seahawks.  At camp in 2014, Erik can’t wait for all the activities at the lake, woodworking, glass fusion, Color War, the water slides and the trip to Dorney Park.  Here is a pic…

In Plymouth Meeting, PA, I got to know Zoey and Tanner Joseph, both who will be joining us at camp in 2014 for their first summers.  Zoey is in the 5th grade and will be an Upper Inter while Tanner is in the 7th grade and will be a Lower Senior.  Zoey is currently rehearsing a modern lyrical dance routine at the Institute of Dance Artistry for an upcoming recital in May.  She also plays midfield on her travel soccer team, the Colonial Wildcats.  When at home, she likes to write her own songs and sing.  Zoey let me know that she loves dogs and animals.  When she gets to Canadensis, she is excited for the ropes course and zipline, the quads and all of the sports at camp.  As for Tanner, he is playing third base on his baseball team, the Blue Jays.  In the winter, he plays in a basketball league.  In the fall, he plays midfield on his travel soccer team, the Colonial Pythons.  When it comes time to rooting for sports, he is a big fan of the Eagles, 76ers, Phillies, Flyers and Union.  Tanner is really excited for the hondas and all of the sports at camp.  Here is a snapshot…

CITS 2014: NOAH SAFFER

Noah is loving Volleyball!

Noah is loving Volleyball!

Noah “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar” Saffer lives in Short Hills, NJ, and will be returning to Canadensis for his 7th summer! When Noah is at home he enjoys watching basketball, going to debates (forensics), hanging with his friends, and creating software; he has even recreated games from the 80’s in his spare time! His dream job is to be the head of a start-up in Silicon Valley or to become a top level software designer at Google. Noah has many hidden talents – he can build a computer using only one arm while listing at leave five players on each NBA team; something tells me that Noah would be the Canadensis “Fast Cookie” champion. Noah has a lot of favorite activities at camp and his favorite is probably the summit. He has also learned that Gaga at Canadensis can get intense! One of his favorite camp memories is of the water wars of Lower Senior/Upper Senior summer. Noah wants all of our first time campers to know that they don’t need to be nervous about coming to camp for the first time because their new camp friends will always be there for them! Noah never leaves for a summer at Canadensis without his 3DS (it gets him through bunko!) and will not leave this summer without whooping them at Mario Kart one last time!

April Excitement!

Hello Canadensis!

I hope this blog entry finds everyone celebrating with some Spring cheer!  Finally, it seems like the bad weather we’ve experienced in the Northeast all Winter long is behind us.  For us in the Winter office, plans for the Summer are in high gear!  It’s time for some April Excitement!

Excitement for us really hit a great note a few weeks ago when we attended the Annual American Camp Association Tri-State Conference in Atlantic City, NJ.  This is the largest gathering of camp professionals each year.  This year, there were more than 3500 people in attendance.  The multi-day convention is a great opportunity to attend a number of different workshops hosted by trainers and camping professionals in which topics range from child development to facility improvements to new practices and procedures for camps to staff training.  We always find our trek to South Jersey really great and it inspired a lot of new ideas for the upcoming summer.  The convention also gives us an opportunity to cruise through the vendor hall which features all different kinds of companies that want to bring their products or services to camp.  Here was a picture I took of Cara and Eric experimenting with a camp program that teaches campers how to broadcast the weather…

On Sunday, April 6, we celebrated our New Camper Bounce Event at Rebounderz in Edison, NJ.  First off, we wanted to thank all of the families that took time out of their busy schedules and made it out to Central New Jersey.  Our Juniors and Lower Inters of Summer 2014 enjoyed their time and spent a few hours filled with bouncing on trampolines, playing arcade games, eating pizza and playing some New Camper Bingo.  For those families that couldn’t make it, no worries.  We hope that you’ll be at our Open House Event on Sunday, June 1 at camp.  Here are a few pictures from the New Camper Bounce…

Last week, we opened up our tour scheduling book and it has been great speaking to so many families that are interested in seeing Canadensis this summer for their children that would be coming to camp in 2015.  We have also had a lot of interest in our Tour and More Weekend and Play Day.  For more information about that opportunity (including how to enroll), you can click here.

For our existing families, hopefully you have begun to start working on your camp forms, many which are due a month from now on May 9.  If not, you might want to start doing that very, very soon.

We would also like to congratulate the winners of our Annual Camp Canadensis March Madness bracket challenge winners.  On the camper side of things, we had a three way tie between Andrew Wagner, Max Wittenberg and Ashton Wittenberg.  For the staff, our winner was Samm “Twin Pop” Falk.  Congratulations guys!  This summer, we will have your prizes waiting for you at a morning line-up.  This was the first year that no one in the entire bracket picked the overall winner, UConn.

Congrats to Andrew, Max, Ashton and Samm for winning this year's bracket.

What would a blog be without reporting on the home visits I was at this month.  Here are all of the great visits from the past few weeks…

In Port Washington, NY, I spent some time with Jack McMillan, who will be coming to camp for his first summer.  Jack is currently in the 3rd grade and will be in our Upper Junior Boys division in 2014.  Jack loves to go skiing and is already skiing double black diamonds while on ski trips to Lake Tahoe, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and Massachusetts.  He recently played in the PYA Basketball League.  Jack enjoys biking, building model rockets and model cars as well as racing remote controlled Traxxas cars.  He showed me one of his cars and they are really cool!  This summer, Jack is looking forward to activities like water skiing, the quads and cooking.  Here is a picture…

In North Caldwell, NJ, I saw Daniel Gold, who is a 4th generation Canadensis camper.  Wow!  Currently in 4th grade, this will be Daniel’s first summer at camp as part of our Lower Inter Boys division.  Daniel just recently finished up his hockey season, where he played forward on his team, the Blackhawks, who made it to the championship game.  In the Fall and Spring, he plays forward, midfield and goalie on a soccer team.  In the Winter, he trains for soccer as well.  When at home, he enjoys playing Madden 25 and fantasy football.  Daniel let me know that he won his fantasy football league’s championship in his first year of playing.  His favorite sports teams are the Flyers, Phillies and Red Bulls.  He also enjoys reading Sports Illustrated and Roald Dahl books.  At camp, he is excited for Color War and the trip to Dorney Park.  Here is a pic…

In Pine Brook, NJ, I hung out with Camryn Wax, who will be in our Lower Inter Girls division this summer for her first summer at Canadensis.  In the 4th grade, Camryn just finished up her basketball season in the Montville Rec Basketball League where she played on her team called the Super Shooters.  She is also involved in a Girls Scout Troop, where she told me of a cool experience where she got to camp out and sleep at the Museum of Natural History.  Camryn also enjoys gymnastics and takes  art classes.  At home, she has been known to break out her pogo stick and once set a personal record of more than 1000 jumps.  She could have done more if her father (who was counting) didn’t tell her to stop.  Ha Ha!  When she comes to camp, Camryn told me she is excited for all of the activities at the lake, swimming and the Art Center.  Here is a photo…

In Livingston, NJ, I got to know the Friedman twins, Ryan and Zach, who are in the 2nd grade and will be in our Lower Junior Boys division in 2014.  Both boys play hockey in floor hockey leagues, but Zach roots for the Rangers while Ryan is a fan of the Devils.  Ryan also plays ice hockey.  Both brothers also play basketball and tennis.  Zach added golf to his list of activities, too.  When it comes to video games, they enjoy Minecraft.  Zach also plays a game called Head Soccer while Ryan plays a game called Big Win Fantasy.  When they get to camp for their first summer this year, both are looking forward to playing in the CHL (Canadensis Hockey League) and all of the sports activities.  Here is a picture…

In New York, NY, I met up with Jake Herzberg, who is in the 4th Grade and will be in our Lower Inter Boys division this summer.  Jake likes to play basketball.  Now that the weather is warming up, he just started playing in a baseball league, too.  When at home, he is a big fan of Minecraft, watching his favorite TV Show “Family Guy,” playing the piano and rooting for his favorite basketball team, the Chicago Bulls.  Jake also told me that he loves to eat a lot of junk food.  When he comes to Canadensis for his first summer this year, he is really ready for Color War, fishing, archery, waterskiing, the quads and free play.  Here is a picture…

Counselor Jake Asman had some really cool news to share with us.  Jake, who attends Ithaca College as a Media Production major, has really kick started his broadcast career.  Over the past few weeks, he has had interviews with several big names in the world of sports including ESPN analyst and former football player Damien Woody, former New York Giants punter Sean Landeta and WFAN radio broadcaster Steve Somers (who just so happens to be a favorite of both mine and Jake’s).  Jake and partner Dan Budick have their own podcast that you can check out by clicking here.  Nice job, Jake!

Philly Area Junior Girls!

Sammy

I’ve got some more great new campers to introduce you to! First up is Sammy (Samantha or Sam), she is currently in 3rd grade and will be an Upper Junior Girl this summer.  She lives in Penn Valley, PA and last summer she came to Canadensis for the first ever Tour & More Play Day!  I had a lot of fun hanging out with her and getting to know more about her, and here’s what you should know about this great new camper:
  • She is a gaga champion!  Last summer she was called “Lady Gaga” after winning first place at her day camp!
  • She loves activities that start with S…including soccer (she plays midfield), softball, and sewing!
  • Her family has a fish tank in the house, a fish pond in the backyard, and while we were talking we saw a deer wander into her backyard – it felt like we were at camp!
  • She had heard a bunch of rumors about camp…like that there are alligators in the lake, and that only boys can use the slides in one of the pools…so I’m glad I got to tell her that those were all wrong!
  • She is an amazing rainbow loomer (and I’ve seen a lot of loomers!).   She showed me all the stuff that she made, including charms of smiley faces, bracelets with the flag of countries on it, and tons of awesome stuff like snakes and dragons – she figures it all out herself!
  • She loves 1Direction, and Zayn is her favorite!
  • Her favorite color is gold, and she’s only won color or one time at day camp, but it was when she was on the blue team!
  • She is a big sister to her brother, Zachary (he’s also a good rainbow loomer!)
  • She likes to write stories, including ones for her brother.
  • She likes to sing, and has been in shows before like Peter Pan. She thinks that she will try out for the play this summer!
  • At her most recent birthday party, they played “camp games” that her mom (a big time camper) organized!  One of the party games was like “Miss Canadensis”, where the boys got dressed up like beauty contestants…but I won’t tell you the winner was!
  • Her mom makes really good cookies…and Sam is already excited for some on visiting day!
  • She had great packing questions, and has already got soccer socks and personalized camp stationery ready to go!
  • She is a really great artist, I loved seeing all of her projects and ceramics!
  • She goes to classes at the Handworks Studio, and has sewn pillows, bags, a stuffed animal scarf, a crazy monkey, and is working on a skirt!
  • She also goes to Hebrew school and likes her to teachers.
  • For her electives she wants to do gaga, needle art, glass fusion, and ceramics…sounds like some fantastic choices!
Ali
Next up is Ali, a current 3rd grade who will be an Upper Junior Girl at camp this summer!  She lives in Plymouth Meeting, PA, and was at camp last summer for the Tour & More Weekend.  She’s been up at camp at bunch of times visiting her two older sisters on Visiting Day as well.  She’s the youngest, and she can’t wait to spend the entire summer at Canadensis this year!  Here’s what you should know about this awesome girl:
  • She is really good at cleaning up, and is going to help her bunk win honor bunk prizes this year!
  • But, she’s also a “pack rat” who loves to collect things!  She just got bunk beds in her bedroom, and they are covered with stuffed animals!
  • I’m serious…there are too many stuffed animals to count in her room!  They are on her bed, in her closet…even her trashcan is a stuffed animal!  But there two extra special ones that will be coming to camp with her: Beary Bow and Hershey.
  • She loves being in the 3rd grade, and has the best and nicest third-grade teacher.
  • She loves to dance!  She spends a lot of her time on the weekend rehearsing and going to dance classes, and is on a competition team.
  • Last summer she spent a few weeks at a gymnastics camp. She learned how to do flips (which she can do into swimming pools!) and was hoping she could do it off the balance beam into the foam pit at camp!
  • Really excited about all the lake activities, including the summit.  She wants to ride the banana boat as often as possible!
  • Despite having the shortest legs, she is the fastest of the girls in her family!  The counselors are going to have to try and keep up with her!
  • Ali can be very adventurous.  She’s done some really wild rides at Ocean City before, but she thinks she’ll go in a slower group for Dorney Park.  What she’s really excited about is trying to find and to win a huge stuffed animal…especially if it’s a Snoopy so it can hang out with the other ones on her bed!
  • Her family just got an adorable new dog named Ozzie!
  • She suggested that on the first day of camp, I should have Annie (my dog) spray-painted blue and gold to welcome everybody to the summer…so funny!
  • She loves to talk and chat…and she loves the color purple!
  • She played lacrosse this year, but didn’t really like it once the ball hit her in the face! But, she’s ready for all the activities at camp!
 Nuricks
In the photo above, you can see all of Ali’s sisters!  On the left is Jenna, a current 6th grader who will be a Freshman Girl for her 4th summer at camp!  She is really excited about all the changes for Freshman, including cooking as an elective, the perks of being on the Hershey trip, no more instructional swim, and a couple of late morning sleep ins!  Jenna is a really sweet big sister, and she knows how hard it can be to go away for camp each summer…and she’s so caring, and gives great advice!  It was fun talking about some of our favorite camp memories, including going on the summit with Annie and the makeover of Coach K a few years ago!
On the right is Kylie, a current 4th grader who will be a Lower Inter Girl at camp for her 2nd summer.  She went through major depression when camp ended last year…her mom said you didn’t want to be around her for a whole week!  She would be ready to get on the buses to Canadensis right now, so luckily there are only 85 days to go!  She really loved being on the camp competition dance team, and she told me how much fun it was to paint Annie’s nails last summer.  She having a good time “ruling” the school this year, and she’s looking ahead to some great new elective choices for Lower Inters, including quads, ceramics wheel and the Canadensis Today Show!
Trampoline
I look forward to seeing both of these girls on Sunday, along with ALL OF OUR NEW CAMPERS at Rebounderz for New Camper Bouncing!  It’s so much fun introducing all the awesome new kids I’ve met this year, and watching the new friendships form.  Plus…we are going to do a ton of bouncing!  Can’t wait to flip out with all of you…I’ve loved bouncing since I was a kid (check out the throwback above from when I was 10 on a family trip to Israel!).

Home Visits on Long Island!

Julia

I recently had a great trip to NY, and got to spend time with some Canadensis families, including Julia, a current 3rd grader who will be an Upper Junior Girl this summer. She lives in Woodbury, NY, and goes to the Syosset schools.  She just cannot wait for camp!  Here’s what you should know about this great new camper:
  • She really loves to dance!  She is taking hip-hop and jazz classes right now, and she likes her jazz song best “Popular Song”.  Her hip-hop song is “Party in the USA”, which is one of my favorites!
  • Julia also just finished her basketball season.  Her softball season is about to start, and she plays in both the fall and the spring and she plays all different positions.
  • She obviously very active…but does not like running on grass, so soccer is not one of her favorite sports!
  • She also goes to Brownies, and they get to do crafty projects.  Last year they took a really fun trip to Build a Bear.
  • Her cousin Hannah lives in Florida, and is also coming to camp with her for the first time this summer.  They both did Tour & More Weekend last year.
  • She started learning to play the violin this year.
  • Her room is decorated with photos of her teammates, along with all of her trophies.  She hopes to start earning big ones like her sister!
  • Julia had too many teddy bears to count on her bed, and she likes to stay up late.  It’s very hard to wake her up in the morning sometimes – the counselors might even has to jump on her bed!
  • She just started reading the Harry Potter books about a month ago and she is already in the middle of book four…but she might already be on book five by now!
  • Her day camp last year went to see Matilda on Broadway so I told her about all the different trips Junior girls go on (camping overnight, movies and Dorney Park!).
  • She will probably want to be on one of our competition dance teams just like her big sister and choose dance as an elective.
  • Her favorite color is pink and she is known as the LOUD one in her family!
  • She and some friends dressed up like a “nerds” for Halloween, and she showed me the costume in her closet in that’s almost completely filled with costumes!
Pollaks
Her big sister, Alexandra is in 5th grade, and will be an Upper Inter Girl this summer.  It’s going to be her second year at camp, and she’s pretty obsessed with Canadensis!!  Most of the posters in her room are from camp – she took photos and put them in the shape of “six” because that was her bunk number.  She’s been telling her sister tons of camp stories, it’s their favorite topic to talk about a night.
Alexandra has been staying busy, taking jazz and hip-hop dance classes.  She loves texting with her bunk friends all the time, and had a reunion at Make Meaning this year (she showed me the awesome candle they made!).  She’s already decided she wants to be a camp director when she’s older (nothing could make me happier!) and she’s about to start playing softball!  Can’t wait to see her on the field this summer!

Jared
The next night, I went to Merrick, NY, and got to spend time with Jared, a current 3rd grader who will be an Upper Junior Boy at camp this summer.  He did Tour & More Weekend in 2012, and I was totally impressed with how much he remembers about camp!  He’s a super active guy who really loves to play sports, so his counselors better have a lot of energy to keep up with him!  Here’s what you should know about this all-star camper:
  • His favorite sports are baseball and basketball.
  • He plays on a flag football team and also plays roller hockey!  I told him about the Super League (more competitive optional leagues for campers) and he thinks he might want to be in the CFL (football), CHL (hockey) and CBL (baseball) leagues, but he has time to decide!
  • Jared is also really excited about the lake activities and the summit (climbing wall & slide in the lake).
  • We went through the camp schedule, and talked about Special Days on Thursday, and he thought it all sounded like a lot of fun!  He’ll have no trouble sleeping until 9:30am on the late mornings!
  • He’s looking forward to the camping trip, and might want to spend a night in the backyard to get ready before camp.
  • He doesn’t like fish, and won’t eat tuna fish, fish sticks, or anything fishy…but he will try fishing as an activity!
  • He’s really excited for the glass fusion program, and will probably choose that for an elective.
  • Jared has a razor motorbike that he loves to ride, so he’s going to be really fast at learning how to ride the Quads and Hondas.
  • He also likes mountain biking, and has gone on hills at the Norman J. Levy preserve.
  • Both of his parents went to camp and Jared is a total camper!
  • His dad played lacrosse in college but he hasn’t tried – maybe he’ll give it a go this summer?
  • Blue is one of his favorite colors, so maybe he’ll be on the blue team for Color War!
  • He’s really smart, understood everything we talked about and had wonderful camp questions!
Ben
Jared’s big brother had some friends over during my visit, including Ben Negrin!  Ben is in 6th grade, and is going to be a Freshman Boy at camp this summer – and he’s getting his 5 year jacket!  Very exciting!!
Tim
I also got to see Tim Hatcher – our Digital Photography specialist.  We can’t wait to have Tim back for his second summer.  I met up with him on the Hofstra University campus, and then I got to spend some time getting to meet his awesome and creative friends who also want to work at camp this summer.  It was wonderful to see him, he can’t wait for summer!!

CITs 2014 – HEATHER SCHULTZ

image (5)

Heather Schultz lives in Holland, Pa and will be returning to Canadensis for her 8th summer! When she’s at home she enjoys singing, acting, and spending time with her friends – she’s also a really great cook! Heather’s dream job is to be an elementary school teacher, so she’ll absolutely love spending time as a CIT to her own bunk of campers! Her favorite camp activity is the Fitness Center. One of Heather’s favorite camp memories was coming back to her cabin last year and finding that they had taken all of the honor bunk plaques in Girls Camp – her bunk loves a friendly prank! She never leaves for camp without her iPod, you never know when you’re going to need a random song, and she’s also obsessed with musicals! Being a camper at Canadensis has taught Heather how to be a good friend,  and also how to be more adventurous! She would like all of our first time campers to try everything – “never be afraid to go outside your comfort zone”. Heather is planning to get on the Summit at least once this summer, and when she hops on the bus in August she’ll have tried anything and everything new that crossed her path this summer!

Alex and Heather love Canadensis!

New Campers from Blue Bell, PA!

Hannah

A few nights ago I met with two new campers from Blue Bell, PA.  Hannah is a current 5th grader, and will be an Upper Inter Girl at camp this summer!  She came up for Tour & More Weekend last summer and got to sleepover and do a lot of activities!  She’s so excited to spend a full summer at camp, and she was thrilled to hear she can change her electives every week…so even if she doesn’t get all her top choices right away, she’ll definitely get them during the summer!  Here’s what you should know about Hannah:
  • She recently went on an awesome family vacation to Israel, and her favorite part of the trip was going in the Dead Sea and doing the hikes in the desert.
  • She plays the violin at school and takes piano lessons at home!
  • She goes to gymnastics once a week.  She’s on level 6, but has never been on a competition team before.  I definitely think she would love being on our gymnastics team this summer!
  • She’s also a pretty good swimmer, but does not like doing flip turns because the water goes up her nose – maybe we can teach her that at camp!
  • Hannah remembers a lot of fun stuff from the Tour & More weekend, including hanging out on the platform during free play, and going on the banana boat in the lake and holding on the longest!
  • She’s about to be in a play at school and her role is “Camper Sam” – and she has a little brother named Sam!
  • Her dad is a photographer (that’s why the photo above is so much better than my usual iPhone images) and she plans to sign up for a photography elective this summer!
  • She’ll be doing just about every art elective…ceramics wheel (like her Bubbe), art shack, and more!  But, she is also very interested in the cheerleading elective.
  • Hannah dressed up as a devil for Halloween this year, but she’s totally sweet!  However, I was warned that she likes to play practical jokes like losing her tooth…and she can cry on command!
  • She collects snow globes from all the places her dad travels and keeps them in her room.
  • She’s an avid reader who loves the “Percy Jackson” books, and just started reading the “Real Mermaids” series.
  • Her favorite color is neon orange and she has a gymnastics leotard that color…I told her to bring it to camp and I’m sure she’ll find some crazy reasons to dress up and wear it!
Serena
Next, I’d like to introduce you to Serena, a current 3rd grader who will be an Upper Junior Girl at camp this summer!  She loves sports…a lot, so she’ll be hard to keep up with this summer!  I got to hang out with her and her family after she finished homework, but before she went to basketball in the evening, she’s super busy!  She’s got both a serious and a silly side, and here’s what you should know about Serena:
  • Her most favorite sport would absolutely be soccer!  She plays soccer year round, and dressed up as a soccer player (Olympian Brandi Chastain) for Halloween this year.
  • She got the “Most Versatile” soccer award from her team (the Whitpain Wild) because she plays both midfield and goalie – she loves both positions!
  • She loves to run, so she doesn’t like tennis as much as other sports because it’s not enough running!
  • Last summer she went to a bunch of different week long summer camps – including a week of science camp, art camp, 2 soccer camps, a general sports camp and more!
  • Her family goes on vacation to Club Med in the Dominican Republic every year, and she loves doing archery, trapeze, dances by the pool and more activities there each year!
  • Until last year, she used to do gymnastics as an afterschool activity, and showed off how flexible she is!
  • She’s going to celebrate her birthday at camp this summer!  You get a bonus phone call with your family on your birthday, and it’s pretty cool that her dad is born on the same day!  They are both born on July 21st (and that’s the reason why she wears #21 on her jersey).
  • For her electives, she is definitely going to do soccer but she also really likes the idea of glass fusion, photography, art shack and ceramics!
  • She’s not very interested in trying lacrosse or swim team, but coming to camp is all about trying new things!
  • Her neighbor built a gaga pit in their backyard, so she can practice before the summer and be a pro a camp!
  • Her family rotates who cooks dinner on Friday nights, and when she was recently in charge she made a pasta with peppers and basil.  She didn’t eat it because she prefers plain food…but she loves matzoh ball soup, which we have every Friday!
  • One of her favorite shows is “Dancing with the Stars”, and the new season was starting on the same night I came over…I hope she made it home from basketball in time to watch!
